Ironhand

What's new in Ironhand

Every update to Ironhand, our hex wargame of the Second World War and the age of chivalry, newest first.

The 3D table

  • Three ways to see the battlefield. Settings → Board offers Flat, Tabletop (the map tilted like a table in front of you, with the pieces standing up) and 3D table.
  • The 3D table. A full 3D battlefield with raised hills, trees, villages, rivers and bridges, and your armies as paper miniatures. Drag to turn it, right-drag to slide it, and scroll to zoom. There are Commander, Ground and Map views, plus Turn board to see it from the enemy’s side.
  • Play the whole game on the 3D table. Click or drag units to move them, see routes and targets before you commit, and watch shots, losses and retreats play out.
  • The battlefield remembers in 3D. Shell craters, scorch marks, burning villages, ruins and smoking tank wrecks.
  • The time of day, and the weather. Dawn-to-dusk light, darkness in night battles, and falling snow in winter.
  • Battle films from the 3D table. “Save as video” films your battle on the 3D table, with the camera moving in on the big moments.
  • Phase banners. “Play a card”, “Choose units”, “Move units” and “Attack” sweep across the map at each step of your turn. You can turn them off in Settings.
  • 11 new medieval battles:
    • The Hundred Years’ War: Crécy, Poitiers, Agincourt, Verneuil, Patay and Castillon.
    • The Crusades: Dorylaeum, Montgisard, the Horns of Hattin, Arsuf and Jaffa.
  • 4 new medieval campaigns, playable as England, France, the Crusaders or the Saracens.
  • The Wars of the Roses. Towton, Barnet and Tewkesbury, with campaigns for York and for Lancaster and the Tudors.
  • More games. A link to all our games at punatic.org, on the title screen and in Settings.
  • Small fixes. The order button now reads “Confirm units”. The hex report notes line of sight on impassable hills.

Ironhand, online play and the battle editor

  • A new name. Order of Battle is now Ironhand. Old links still work.
  • Ranked play. Make a profile, find a ranked battle, and climb the ratings ladder.
  • Fair online battles. Online battles now run on the server, so hidden cards stay hidden.
  • Watch live battles, and get turn alerts when it’s your move, even with the game closed.
  • Battle editor. Paint the map, place the armies, set objectives and special rules, test your battle, then share it.
  • Community battles. Play battles made by other players, rate them and see how often each side wins.
  • Veterans and commanders. In campaigns, units that survive earn names, ranks, honours and skills, and you choose a commander for your army.
  • Theatre campaigns. Normandy 1944: choose where to strike on a campaign map, with your army’s strength carried from battle to battle.
  • Medieval history. Ten historic battles of the British Isles, from Fulford Gate and Hastings to Bannockburn and Bosworth Field, each with a “What really happened” note, plus medieval campaigns.
  • Battle films. Turn any replay into a video with dice, captions and sound.

Replays, effects and music

  • Training battle. A short guided battle that teaches the game step by step.
  • Replays and battle stories. Rewatch your battles, share a replay link, and read each battle’s story, told as a wartime dispatch or a medieval chronicle.
  • Battle effects. Gun flashes, tracers, shell bursts, air strikes, arrows and smoke.
  • The battlefield remembers. Craters, scorch marks, burning villages and damaged bridges.
  • Music that builds as the battle gets close, with fanfares for medals, victory and defeat.
  • Install as an app and play offline.

A new look

  • Desktop layout with Settings, unit figures, smooth animation, sound effects, zoom and pan.
  • Weather and light for each battle.
  • Odds when you aim. See your chances before you fire.
  • Battle statistics, a replay of the last turn, and a summary of the computer’s turn.
  • Online play with friends. Invite links, a lobby, and chat.
